Make a Long URL into a Shorter One

One of the problems of being online so much is trying to remember URLS. Some useful ones are so long, it seems there must be a better way.

Well, it's not a perfect solution, but using a URL shortening service can help. The basic premise, is to enter a long URL, and the short URL service will create a new version of it using THEIR URL and a code attached to the end.

Another variation is the service provides you with a subdomain a la http://randomword.notlong.com. Which service you go with depends on your preference and the level of service you really need.

Some service do not require a registration to create a short URL, and others do. Personally I like NOT registering to use a service, but chances are the better services require a sign-up.

For an outline of the various URL shortening services available, NotLong.com has a good overview and comparison chart.

Shorl.com allows you to create a short URL and then gives you a password so you can access stats on that new URL later. Hmmmm, could be handy for tracking alot of stuff.

Ex. Pay per click campaign - could track how often a link is accessed. Gotta use that link with your ad.

ex2. Track an offline campaign. Create a short URL and put it in an offline direct marketing campaign to see how often that link was accessed. Hey better put a sign up near Walmart (you've seen those right?) to see how well that works....

ex3. Track affiliate links - if you have some products you sell as an affiliate, then use a short URL inplace of the normal link so you have an additional way to track clicks.

Some other situations that having a shorter URL to use in a pinch would be helpful is: telling a URL over the phone, shortening up a URL to fit in an e-mail without a break. You don't want to give out your real site URL to a stranger so give out the SHORT URL.

If anyone out there has more ideas on ways to use shortened URLS - drop me a line!

For my next article, I will let you in on a COOL tax deduction. Won't work for this year, but it will be a blessing for 2004 taxes~!
